Make your life easier by having these supplies at home before you bring baby home.  Here's a trimmed down list of necessities you'll want for the first few weeks.
 
This list was adopted from a list that was emailed around my circle of friends as each friend was expecting her first child. 
 What to Have at Home Print    Minimize

 
  • Diapers - Pampers Swaddlers or Huggies Newborn (1 Package only, if you have a large baby you may go to size 1 very quickly)
  • Diaper Cream - Any Zinc Oxide based ointment such as Desitin, Balmex, A&D, or Boudreaux's Butt Paste
  • Wipes - Any brand with no added alcohol or fragance
  • Dreft baby detergent
  • Dreft spray or baby oxy clean for spots
  • Disposable or fabric washclothes for the first few weeks' diaper changes and sponge baths
  • Baby bath soap - Aveeno, Johnson's, Mustela are good
  • Cotton balls for cleaning umbilical cord with water
  • Bulb syringe for cleaning runny noses
  • Baby Thermometer (rectal)
  • Infant Tylenol
  • Mylicon for gas
  • Gauze Pads and Neosporin (**for circumcision care)
  • Purell hand sanitizer for the revolving door of visitors

Supposedly Huggies are better for boys & pampers for girls...but i've only had girls so i dont know from experience. just something i heard.

My personal diaper preference (after trying numerous brands) are the pampers baby dry. But for things like diapers I recommend that moms try out different brands for themselves and find what they like.
