You should have a lot of books around and start reading to your baby at an early age. At just ten bucks a pop (give or take) you can't really go wrong choosing a board book for your baby, but if you want some inspiration here are some of the best books for babies up to 24 months.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr.

Not much to say about this book except it is a classic for a reason. Its simple text features animals, colors and repitition.

Hug

This book by Jez Alborough tells the story of a little monkey who wants a hug from his mommy. Even though it has just 3 simple words the illustrations tell a larger story and you can have lots of fun saying the word hug in different intonations to get the meaning across. Get the oversized version if you can find it because with good illustrations, the bigger the better!

My Friends

by Taro Gomi. Each page has the text "I learned to ___ from my friend the ___" where a little girl learns different activities such as running, jumping, loving from different animals.

Tumble Bumble by Felicia Bond

The actual story doesn't really matter in this book because the text flows and rhymes so nicely you will be practically singing this one. An absolute must for your nursery book collection

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

There is something comforting about reading this book - maybe because you know how many generations of children have gone to bed hearing the same words. When my older toddler fought her bedtime it helped to personalize this book by saying goodnight to her toyhouse, her light, her comb, her bowl of mush, eh you get the idea.

You can't really go wrong with a book by Sandra Boynton. You can also try Hippos Go Berserk! or Birthday Monsters!

That's Not My Dinosaur

This book (or any in the Usborne Touchy Feely board book series) is really cute - great for young babies because the text is short and the pages have different textures to keep baby's attention.

With Love from Maisy by Lucy Cousins

There are a bunch of lift-the-flap Maisy books, but this one is about giving which is a nice concept to teach kids.

Fred and Ted Like to Fly by Peter Eastman

This is a great transition book from board books to story books, good at around 18 months. The story is about Fred and Ted who are friends that fly to the beach. Enjoyable for both the reader and child.

Mommies Are For Counting Stars

Another great book for an older baby, this is a lift the flap book all about mommies. The other books in the series are good too, but since TinyPlayground is a site for moms I'm plugging this one.
